In the fall of 1977, our founder, Deets Finley, gathered 13 men to start the Alpha Mu chapter of Phi Gamma Delta.
This Fraternity was founded on five values: friendship, knowledge,
service, morality, and excellence. Deets Finley was instrumental in
bringing the group together and Jeef Steen soon took the reins as the chapter’s
first president. Soon after, Alpha Mu developed into one of the strongest
fraternal organizations on the campus of Texas A&M University.
Dr. Richard H. Ballinger became the groups first Purple Legionnaire, serving as
both their graduate advisor and mentor. Many of those early members might
remember sitting in “the room” at their house on 1414 South
College. Through their years at college members of the Fraternity matured
through hardships and celebrations to become brothers. In 1997, it was
decided by International Headquarters that it would be in the best interest of
the chapter to cease operations and withdraw itself from Texas A&M
University.
In the fall of 2001, Alpha Mu was re-established as a Delta
Colony. Fifty-four men were chosen as the Alpha Pi pledge class, based on
the same values as the original founders. These men with the guidance of
Purple Legionnaire, Eric DiPasquale, made their presence felt on campus after
just one semester. These founding fathers combined their talents and
resources to become brothers and to set the standard for the other pledge
classes to follow.
On March 22, 2003, 74 brothers were chartered and initiated into the Alpha Mu
Chapter of Phi Gamma Delta. During the spring semester of 2005, due in
large part to the extensive help of graduate brothers such as Jon Yates, Stuart
Sasser, and Carper Capt, the brothers of Alpha Mu once again found a home in
their new house off of South Dowling Road.
Since these momentous dates, the brothers have excelled in all aspects of
college and fraternity life including athletic, service, scholastic, and
philanthropic endeavors. In the pursuit of excellence, brotherhood has
developed. This bond that they share will continue to grow once college
has ended and the members of the Alpha Mu Chapter of Phi Gamma Delta will
forever be known as brothers.
